Larry's comments about the practitioners' ruler using an "adaptiveness" standard are consistent with our experience. As we wind down in the final months of our project, teachers and principals have thanked us often for contributions that go beyond math and science. One of the most significant impact areas, according to our teachers, was changing the landscape of professional development its focus, strategies, structures and constructivist approach. These changes will be sustained without any significant costs (except for the "Special Presenters" that will continue to provide release time for teacher PD during normal classroom hours). With new approaches to professional development, teachers see support for flexibility, problem solving and teacher leadership established under the grant. These are the conditions Larry spoke of necessary to sustain an ongoing improvement process.
