This dialogue is interesting. I liked Mike's comment about the necessity of a supportive environment for the teacher's will to sustain and improve. In our LSC which began six years ago we instituted the after school teacher team monthly meetings and paid them a small stipend of $15 hour. As we are trying to sustain their work and move all areas of the curriculum to enabling teachers to have TIME to do their work, we are moving to the importance of CULTURE. We are trying to help districts believe that a culture in which teacher improvement work should be a PART of their regular day. We have been having great success this year with districts developing all sorts of ways to find time for teachers to meet........rather than make it after school and pay them a pittance. We believe this is the avenue to sustainability and continuous improvement.....change the culture.
