Both great questions. I don't think IMP should be the only curriculum offered, at least at this point. I think teachers have enough to deal with in changing their pedagogy and curriculum that they hsouldn't also be asked to deal with hostile parents and students. Our only "all IMP" schools are charter and private schools, in which parents know what the math is before they sign-up their students.
All our schools hold parent nights for the eighth grade parents to inform them of IMP (sometimes students present, sometimes parents do some math). So parents and students choose the curriculum. Hopefully, if the curriculum proves itself as successful, an increasing number will choose it and the traditional will be phased out.
Parent support, even if they select IMP, is a concern. One of our teachers has written a pamphlet for parents to help them help their students. Some schools have newletters to parents, or parent nights to help them.
