Yes, we do have a school that is starting IMP in the 8th grade - Wellesley. They have a good model in that their 9th grade teachers came to the IMP 1 workshops and visited the 8th grade classes on a regular basis, so they got the background. And the 8th grade teachers are attending the IMP2 training so they can see where the curriculum goes. They are doing this to appease their parents who still want students to take calculus in the 12th grade.
Several of our other school systems have mentioned doing this eventually too. I think for the calculus, to make sure students get all the topics on the MCAS and to better match the traditional eighth grade curriculum.
it seems to be working fine.
